Treasure Page One

Hey folks -

Been a while since last time any of us posted - but I think that's a good thing. It means we're all busy (I hope)!

Anyway, I may have mentioned in some previous posts that I'm working on a short eight page story with John Schlim Jr. for a western anthology called Outlaw Territory, which will be published by Image. I've got the first two pages penciled and the first page colored. So, I thought I'd share the pencils and colors for the first page. Hope you enjoy!

Comics?

I love comics. What is there not to love? Really.

And considering that I am finding myself more and more involved in comics and less and less in RPGs lately, I thought it might be interesting to talk a bit about the comics I am currently enjoying. The list isn't real big as I'm pretty picky - the art and the writing have to really line up for me to really get into a series. Anyway...

Northlanders - This is a new book from Vertigo. From Brian Wood and Davide Gianfelice. The story takes place during the age of the Vikings and the main character returns from his travels abroad to find that his inheritance has been stolen by his uncle. So far, the story has been quite intriguing and the art is fantastic. I have high hopes for this series!

Scalped - This is another Vertigo book, from Jason Aaron and RM Guera. I don't even know where to begin to describe this book. Visually, it is stunning! RM Guera is absolutely amazing (the only issue I have is that he's not doing the covers too). The story has been absolutely fantastic as well. There is allot of good stuff in here - a statement on the plight of Native Americans, sex, a murder mystery, secret plots, and very, very interesting characters. What I especially like is that all the characters have their demons - nobody is black or white - rather, they are all various shades of grey. I think the first trade is out - pick it up!

MouseGuard - This book is from Archaia Studios Press. By David Petersen (who is a very nice guy, btw). First of all - this book is done in a square format which I absolutely love. It was very ballsy for them to publish this in that format, but it works. And the art is absolutely gorgeous - not to mention the story has been clean and fun. Good fantasy adventure!

Conan - From Darkhorse Comics. By Tim Truman and Tomas Giorello. I have to say - I have loved this book from the beginning when it was Kurt Busiek, Cary Nord, and Dave Stewart working on it. I had my doubts about it when I first saw Tomas Giorello's work - but the latest issue (#47) really blew me away. And perhaps what I was annoyed with was Isanove's paints over his lines - but the coloring team they have on the book now is great. I really hope they stick with them. Not only that, but it seems to have a vaguely European quality - for some reason I think of Moebius. But anyway, it's good stuff.

Astonishing X-Men - From Marvel Comics, by Joss Whedon (Firefly, Buffy) and John Cassaday (in my opinion, probably the best sequential artist in the business these days). Awesome take on the X-Men from a great writer and a fantastic artist. It's been fun, not too serious, and beautifully illustrated. I typically don't read a whole lot of "superhero" books, but this one has been really good.

I also generally read all the stuff from Archaia Studios Press - stuff like Robotika, Okko, The Killer, and I'm really looking forward to reading Miranda Mercury, The Engineer, Cursed Pirate Girl, and The Sisterhood. ASP usually puts out great stuff.

Also, I should recommend a couple great web-comics I read - The Dreamer, Atland, and of course, the one I run - Cowboys and Aliens II.

There are probably a few more I pick up, but these are at the top of my list right now - I regularly look forward to these.

Happy New Year (and more Inuit art)!

Well folks,

Just wanted to wish everybody a happy New Years! I hope your 2008 turns out well! And, to usher in the new year, here's a previously unseen piece of Inuit work I finished up before Christmas...

I also wanted to mention that I recently switched the Baeg Tobar website over to a blog which I'll be updating with news and artwork over the next few months before we relaunch the website with new content and a new direction. By all means, please go check it out! You might find some new artwork from Jeff and Ben over there too...

Upgrades and FIST-A-CUFFS!

This last week has sucked a bit.

It has been since about 2003 since I upgraded my computer and so, for my birthday this year, I ordered a bunch of new parts for my computer. I wanted to upgrade my RAM (though I came to find out that Windows, being as retarded as it is, will only allow for about 3.5 gigs of RAM - idiots), which meant I needed a new motherboard, which meant I needed a new video card and a new processor. I also upgraded to a 500 gig hard drive rather than my 120. Should be a pretty slick machine, right?

Well, we got it all together last Sunday and it refused to work. Nothing can be easy, right? Ugh. My cousin thought it might be a bad motherboard or processor, so he took it home to work on it. Well, it turns out it was my power supply, of course. Something totally unrelated. And I had just bought the damn power supply last Christmas! Good grief. I'll never understand why things don't just work the way they are supposed to.

So, anyway. A week later and I've finally got my computer back. So far, so good. It absolutely flies! My cousin suggested to turn my old hard drive into a scratch disk for Photoshop and so I think I'll try that out, see how that works. Anyway, I'm really excited to put this new machine to the test.

And by God, I never want to go a week without my computer again.

That aside, Fist-a-Cuffs (http://fistacuffs.blogspot.com) just wrapped up. I teamed up with Kennon James (http://www.kennonjames.blogspot.com) and Melita Curphy (http://www.missmonster.com) to form the Blue Bloodz! We did pretty well. We won the East Division but lost the final against the Daughters of General Melee. Cool team, but I don't think they would have had even a slight chance of beating the Blue Bloodz in reality. But, it all depends on viewer votes, so congrats to them.

Anyway, here is my character - Six Gun O'Shea -

Well, hopefully there won't be such a long time between updates for a while since I have my computer back. I don't plan to go without it for some time and I'll be setting my old computer back up just to have a back up, heh.

Western Script

A while back I was approached by a friend of mine, John Schlim Jr. (http://www.fablewoodstudios.com), about working on a short eight page western for an anthology chock full of western stories. We had talked several years ago about doing a western together and he had this very cool half Native American character that I did a drawing of for the story.

Well, if you know me at all, you know that I love comics. But, they worry me endlessly when I do them. However, I felt it was time to suck it up and do some serious comic work. And I love westerns, so this felt like the right thing to do.

I'll probably update now and then with new work from this, though I won't be able to show the finals until the anthology comes out. I will be doing everything, though. All pencils and colors. John will be handling the lettering.

So, I've got pages to do. I had better get to it.

More Lair of the Minotaur Art

Here's another of the images I did for Lair of the Minotaur.

This image was for the song Doomtrooper and depicts Ares, the God of War in all his badassness. Heh. I had fun with this one! Even though I hate drawing dead bodies. No, really hate. It is way too hard and if I can figure out a way around it, I usually do. But, the client really wanted dead bodies at Ares feet and ultimately, it comes down to being what the client wants. And these turned out alright, though I would have preferred to just have had Ares standing there with the heads.

Inuit Series - Creature Concepts

One of the other jobs I've spent the last few months working on is for Inhabit Media - a group out of Canada who is gathering and putting together stories based on Inuit folklore. Much of this material has never seen the written word and are based off verbal storytelling passed down from generation to generation within each family.

I've been working with Inhabit Media for around a year now and I have to say, it has been one of the best freelance experiences I have ever had. They are good people and the work has been consistently fun. I'm really looking forward to the next batch of illustrations, which I should be starting within the next few weeks.

Anyway, I can post a few of these, so here's the first -

Lair of the Minotaur Artwork.

Well,

I figured since we started the blog and everything seems to be working like it should (so far), I should see about posting a previously unseen image I recently finished up (mostly because I finished it earlier this week).

This is one of ten pieces I did for a band called Lair of the Minotaur (here are their websites - http://www.lairoftheminotaur.com and http://www.myspace.com/lairoftheminotaur). I met these guys out at Wizard World Chicago this past summer and they really liked my artwork. So, they hired me to do a number of illustrations for their most recent album.

Now, this image was for a song called Slaughter the Bestial Legion and features Hercules killing a crazed centaur. Fun stuff, right? I thought so!

I've got a few other projects and images I'll be posting in the coming weeks, plus more illustrations from this particular job.

Thanks!

We also have a few other plans for Stone Gaze Press, but, that's for the future.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to sharing a blog with these extremely talented artists and all around great guys! It should be allot of fun and it should be good to have a place to post recent happenings in my professional life.
